KARACHI: The Sindh high court has Wednesday heard a case over charged parking and grilled authorities over how and why some men were allowed to extort people for parking their vehicles in the city.
What legislation allows for the charging of people for allowing them to park their cars in the city? The Sindh High Court (SHC) requests information from the different departments in charge of land, law and order, and traffic management.
The high court judge called for an end to the extortion of individuals in the pretext of permitted paid parking. The locations that are designated for paid parking must be notified, according to the judge.
Will you start charging individuals for parking their cars outside their homes as well starting tomorrow? Authorities were questioned by the bench. People simply pay Rs20-30 to avoid the shame they would face if they refused to pay, according to the report.
Separately, the Sindh government made it necessary for all motorcyclists to put side mirrors on their motorcycles on Tuesday in an effort to reduce road accidents.
This was stated by Sindh Information and Labour Minister, Saeed Ghani, as he was briefing media about the decisions taken in a provincial cabinet meeting held with Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in a chair.
Saeed Ghani said the cabinet had approved the proposal to amend the Motor Vehicle Rules 1969 under which it has been made compulsory that every two-wheeler in the province should have side mirrors.
