There will be no more extensions to the deadline for filing returns after October 15, 2021

Unlike in the past, the Federal Board of Revenue released forms for filing Income Tax Reports for TY 2021 on July 1, 2021, giving taxpayers a 90-day window to file their returns by September 30, 2021.
FBR maintained its fundamental stance on multiple occasions, stating that the term would not be extended beyond the September 30 deadline. FBR executed a comprehensive campaign on prominent electronic and print media at the same time to maximise exposure its public relations and public awareness FBR also collaborated with national heroes and celebrities on social media to spread the same message. Across the country, all cellular firms were mobilised to send personalised messages to their 130 million combined users.

The above unrivalled public awareness effort penetrated every home and educated the general public on the importance of tax compliance. This resulted in a massive influx of visitors to the FBR website, and for the first time ever, over 1.8 million returns were filed in the 90 days that ended on September 30. FBR has received about 600,000 returns from all over Pakistan in the previous three days alone.

This extraordinary interest in existing and new taxpayers put huge pressure on FBR Iris online portal which caused occasional disruptions and adversely affected its functional efficiency, particularly on Sep, 30 being the last day.
Keeping in view the unprecedented increase in users of our website and the hardships they faced owing to technical hiccups, FBR notified one time extension of 15 days on September 30 and extended the return filing deadline till October 15, 2021.
Therefore, it is positively hoped that the taxpayers both old and new will benefit from this extended timeline and thus file their tax returns well ahead of the final date i.e October 15.
It is further reaffirmed that the extension given on September 30 was only due to the fact that FBR’s IT System got overloaded and since that has been fixed now, no more extension will be allowed beyond October 15, 2021.
